After trying to make reservations for the night, I finally realized we were going into the long Labor Day Weekend and managed to secure a spot in Jamestown,ND., and it was only one day out from our caravan starting point.
Great little town and the birthplace and home of Louis L'Amour. The North American Bison Heritage Center is also located here, and is home to the world's largest bison. At one point in our Nations history the bison herds were estimated to be only 400 or so, mostly on private ranches and some zoos. This was down from an estimated 3 or 4 million before uncontrolled hunting. Thanks to the efforts of a zoologist from New York, some ranchers and some plains tribes, the bison is back and doing good.
The heritage center was great. The exhibits are well done and informative.
This white buffalo was part of the Heritage Center herd. As an albino, life was hard for this guy, the sun and general health problems resulted in a shorter life span. He was able to live out his life on a ranch
I am impressed with North Dakota, friendly people and interesting heritage. Of course, we are not here in the winter! Hope you all have a great Labor day weekend and a blessed week to follow.
What a beautiful area!
